About

Derrick T. Kakembo is a Ugandan-born filmmaker and photographer based in London. His first scripted narrative short film, Kojja, explores the challenges of raising Black boys and growing up in London's diaspora. Kakembo shadowed British director Sarmad Masud on the BBC series Boarders (Season 2, Block Two).

In 2017, Kakembo founded Reform The Funk, a production studio and publication that collaborates with emerging creatives to produce cultural art films and content highlighting underrepresented voices.

His work often delves into the complexities of Ugandan characters and transnationalism, with themes of immigration and the Black experience.

Kakembo's 2018 experimental art film Jagga Jagga explored the music and aesthetics of British-Nigerian artist Afrikan Boy, examining themes of love, immigration, war, and education through an artistic lens. The film premiered on Nowness and was screened at various exhibitions.

In 2019, Kakembo co-wrote and directed Ancient Futures, a short musical film in collaboration with Shingai, the former Noisettes frontwoman. The film visually accompanied her solo debut EP/album, telling a story of Black masculinity, resilience, and Afro-futurism.

Kakembo has collaborated with prominent brands such as the V&A Museum, Island Records, BBC, Uber, Leica, and Netflix. His work has appeared in publications like Nowness and Vogue Italia, with his portraiture capturing prominent figures like Ashley Walters, Stefflon Don, Post Malone, Giggs, Bree Runway, and Davido.
